Rajinikanth’s last release Vettaiyan flopped at the box office despite earning over Rs 230 crore at the worldwide box office on a reported budget Rs 160 crore.
His latest release Coolie which was expected to wreak havoc at the box office and break all box office records for Tamil films considering the star cast involved and the director Lokesh Kanagaraj’s track record but the Nagarjuna starrer opened to mixed to negative reviews and fell short of expectations at the box office.

The mass action entertainer has made over Rs 500 crore at the worldwide box office becoming the fourth Tamil film to achieve the feat and is now the fourth biggest Tamil grosser of all time.
Despite that, Coolie, as per the reports, has suffered losses for all its distributors overseas.
In overseas markets, the film has made $20.25 million which is roughly Rs 180 crore but as per the reports, it required to hit at least Rs 200 crore to break-even. This means, it lost money for its overseas distributors.

Another report in Koimoi has also claimed that Coolie lost money in Tamil Nadu as well. The film was expected to make at least Rs 200 crore in its home market but it eventually ended with a lifetime domestic run of just Rs 147 crore in Tamil Nadu.
Additionally, it made Rs 284 crore in India, as per Sacnilk.
