India’s 22 -year -old skater Anandkumar Velkumar has created a new history by winning the gold medal at the speed skating world championship 2025 held in Beidaihe, China. He finished first in the 1,000 meter sprint race of senior men and secured the first place by registering 1: 24.924 minutes. This achievement is the first gold in this championship for India, which proved to be a milestone in the sports history of the country.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Anandkumar on this achievement and wrote on the social media platform X,
“The speed skating world championship is proud of Anandkumar Velkumar, who won the gold medal in the 1,000 meter sprint at the speed skating world championship. His patience, speed and passion has made him the first world champion of India in the skating. His achievement will inspire countless youth. His achievement will inspire countless youth. Earlier, Anandkumar also performed brilliantly in the 500 meter sprint and won a bronze medal with a time of 43.072 seconds. It was also India’s first Senior World Championship Medal, which makes it clear that Anandkumar is constantly creating new records.

The junior category has also been successful in further increasing India’s achievements. Young skater Krish Sharma won a gold medal in junior men’s 1,000 meter sprint. In this way, India has shocked the world by winning gold in both senior and junior classes in 1,000 meters of this championship.

Anandkumar Velkumar, a resident of Tamil Nadu, is also excellent in studies with sports. He has studied engineering from computer science. His historic gold medal journey is a proud moment for India, which is also giving India a new identity in a relatively less popular game like speed skating.
