Defending champions Team India have booked their place in the Super 4 stage of the Asia Cup 2025. Suryakumar Yadav’s side have notched up two wins in two matches – the second one coming against arch-rivals Pakistan by seven wickets in Dubai on Sunday.
Indians will wrap up their league stages campaign with an inconsequential clash against minnows Oman in Abu Dhabi on Friday. It is an opportunity for Team India to give rest to top players like Jasprit Bumrah Shubman Gill and Sanju Samson ahead of tougher encounters in the Super 4 stages.
Team India can once again face Pakistan in their first match of the Super 4 – if Salman Ali Agha’s side qualify for the next stage with a win over UAE in their last match on Wednesday. India will only have one day to recover after their match against Oman before they possibly face Pakistan in the next match.
Jasprit Bumrah rested Arshdeep Singh to play
Team India pacer Jasprit Bumrah’s workload has been carefully managed by Team India management. Bumrah only played three out of the five Tests in the series against England.
At the Asia Cup 2025. Bumrah has already bowled 7 out of his full quota of 8 overs and claimed 3 wickets in the process. With India already qualifying for the Super 4 it doesn’t make sense for Bumrah to push himself against weaker opponents like Oman and keep himself fresh.
Punjab Kings left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh is yet to play a single match in the tournament although he was expected to start off with Bumrah. Arshdeep needs only one wicket to become the first Indian bowler to claim 100 wickets in T20I cricket and he can achieve this feat against Oman.
Sanju Samson rested Jitesh Sharma in
Team India management may also consider resting Sanju Samson although he is yet to bat in the tournament. Samson has done the duties of the wicketkeeper in the extreme heat of Dubai in both the matches against UAE and Pakistan.
The Rajasthan Royals skipper can be given a break from wicketkeeping duties by bringing in Jitesh Sharma. Captain Suryakumar Yadav may also consider playing Samson as a specialist batter and give Shubman Gill a break at the top of the order.
Gill has become all-format player for Team India and is already bearing a heavy workload after being appointed captain of Test team and vice-captain of the T20I team. If Samson and Gill are both rested then Rinku Singh can get an opportunity in the playing 11.
