Bribery Exposed in Silchar Sadar Circle Office

Silchar, Sept 16: A newly appointed IAS probationer has successfully uncovered a bribery scheme at the Silchar Sadar Circle Office, resulting in the immediate suspension of two officials.

The officials implicated in this scandal are Krishna Barman and Mehjabin Rahman Mazumdar.

Ashish Unhale, the probationary IAS officer, stated, “Individuals from remote villages are being exploited, coerced, and humiliated for not paying additional fees. Many grievances go unreported due to insufficient oversight. Following the directive of the DC Cachar, I believed a sting operation was essential to reveal the truth.”

After the investigation, a report was submitted to the District Magistrate, leading to the suspension of both officials while a departmental inquiry is underway.

"They are now facing charges under the Prevention of Corruption Act and other legal statutes," Unhale added.

For several months, residents visiting the Sadar Circle Office to settle their revenue dues (khajna) had reported that officials were demanding extra payments to process standard documents.

In response, District Commissioner Mridul Yadav tasked probationary IAS officer Unhale with conducting a firsthand investigation.

On September 11, Unhale disguised himself as a regular applicant and queued at the Circle Office. Earlier that day, an individual attempting to pay a land tax of Rs 990 was asked for nearly Rs 1,400 by the two accused officials.

When questioned, the officials claimed it was for “court expenses” but failed to provide any receipts. The entire interaction was covertly recorded by the IAS probationer on his mobile device.

When he refused to pay the inflated fee, the officials reportedly became aggressive until Unhale revealed his identity. By that time, the evidence had already been collected.

"This operation serves as a warning to all public servants. Corruption flourishes when accountability is lacking. We are dedicated to safeguarding citizens’ rights," Unhale remarked.

District Magistrate Yadav confirmed that the action was taken based on a specific complaint regarding misconduct.

"The officials were caught in the act and have been suspended. Our message is unequivocal—no government employee should intimidate or mislead the public," the DC asserted.

This incident has sparked public outrage and renewed demands for stronger measures to prevent the misuse of power, especially within government offices.
