This year, the last date for filing income tax returns (ITR) was 15 September 2025, which has been extended for one day i.e. till 16 September 2025. According to government data, so far more than 7.3 crore people have filled their tax returns. This number is more than 7.28 crores last year's record.

Last year, about 70 lakh people filed their returns on the last year. If this time also taxpayers fill the same number of returns, then this year the total number of ITRs can reach beyond 8 crores. This will be a big record.

Government extended the last date

The Income Tax Department has also informed that this time the time limit has been extended by one day i.e. 16 September to increase the facility of filing returns. This relief is especially for those who have not been able to complete their returns yet.

Online portal problems

Although the portal of the Income Tax Department is running better than before, many taxpayers and chartered accountants are complaining about disturbances. Many people have complained that there is an error in the website many times and it is taking a long time to fill the return. Many users have also spoken about the malfunction of the portal on social media. One user tweeted that on the last day everyone tries to fill the return, so the site crashes. He has suggested that if there is such a problem, then at least one or two days should be expanded so that everyone can fill the returns comfortably.

Late return filing will be fined

If you are not able to fill your tax return even today, then there is no need to worry, you can also file returns later, but for this a fine of up to Rs 5,000 and additional interest will have to be paid.
