In a shocking disclosure, it has been revealed that a significant pay gap exists between Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs and the University of Arizona’s men’s basketball head coach. The disparity is striking, with the coach earning more than 50 times above the governor’s salary.

Arizona Republic, a prominent American daily newspaper, published an article Wednesday on its website stating salary information of the public employees.

According to the website, the payroll data was gathered from cities, county governments, universities, community colleges, and the state to build a searchable tool that allows the public to easily access salary details for more than 1.4 million public employees. The data lists full-time employees’ names, job titles, departments, hire dates, and annual salaries as of February 2025. It also includes overtime and bonus pay from the 2024 calendar year wherever applicable.

In the light of that data collated by Arizona Republic, it has come to notice that coaches and medical school leaders at state universities have the highest public employee salaries in the state. Top elected officials in Arizona, such as the governor, attorney general and secretary of state, make far less. In fact, Arizona’s governor is one of the lowest-paid governors in the nation.

As per the data, Thomas Lloyd - University of Arizona’s men’s basketball head coach - is the highest paid person of the state with an annual salary of $4,850,000 which is over 50 times higher than governor Hobbs annual salary of $95,000 (as mentioned by ballotpedia.org).

However, the governor's annual salary is set to increase to $165,000 with effect from January 1, 2027, after Senate Bill 1480 was passed in 2024, which will still be much lesser in comparison.

The second-highest salary goes to Arizona State University (ASU) football coach Kenneth John Dillingham, who earns $3,950,000 annually. He is followed by ASU men’s basketball coach Robert Matthew Hurley at $2,900,000 and University of Arizona football head coach Brent M. Brennan, who draws $2,700,000 per year.

The top four salary slots are dominated by university sports coaches, while the fifth spot is held by Peter Nakaji, Chair of Neurosurgery - BUMCP, University of Arizona, with an annual package of $1,558,343.
