Genesis Perry explained that he often called home reporting incidents of racial abuse. He said that white students would ride around campus, throw trash at him and his friends, and call them racial slurs.

He later noted a license plate number and reported it to the police. According to the family, police did not act on the complaint. When Perry pressed them for updates, he reportedly became a target for both racism and police harassment.

One night, Perry claimed he had to run for his life from campus police. Witnesses contacted his parents after he was arrested.
