New Delhi: Pakistan secured their spot in the Super Four of Asia Cup 2025 with a stronger comeback in final league match against the United Arab Emirates. While the teams performance under qualification pressure was the main focus but an on-field incident during UAE’s chase caught fans attention.
Umpire Ruchira Palliyaguruge was hit by a fielders throw in the sixth over of the second innings. Dhruv Parashar was bowling to Saim Ayub when he pushed the ball toward the third-man area and ran for a single. After catching the ball the fielder attempted a throw to the non-strikers end but it missed its mark and struck the umpires head.
Wasim Akrams bullseye comment drew criticism
Star Pakistans cricketer Wasim Akram was in the commentary box when the incident occurred. His bullseye comment drew criticism from some fans online who felt a more appropriate phrase could have been used to describe what happened.
Straight on the head of the umpire what a throw! Bullseye! One job of the fielder is not to hit the umpire… said Wasim Akram on commentary.
Gazi Sohel stepped in as his replacement.
Saim Ayub quickly went to check on Palliyaguruge who appeared dazed after the impact. Pakistan’s team physiotherapist rushed in to perform a concussion evaluation. Play was temporarily stopped for the check and eventually Palliyaguruge had to leave the field with reserve umpire Gazi Sohel stepping in as his replacement.
Earlier in the match Muhammad Waseem won the toss and opted to field first. Pakistan’s innings got off to disappointing start as Saim Ayub was dismissed for his third consecutive duck in the tournament in the very first over. Sahibzada Farhan soon followed leaving Pakistan struggling at 9/2 by the third over. Salman Ali Agha and Fakhar Zaman then steadied the innings with a 61-run partnership bringing some stability to the team’s chase.
Pakistan posted a total of 160 in their 20-overs
Fakhar Zaman brilliant half-century helped Pakistan post a total of 160 in their 20-overs. However the middle order collapsed again losing four wickets for just 23 runs. Shaheen Afridi once again came to the rescue smashing 29 off 14 balls to guide Pakistan to a competitive total of 146/9 in their 20 overs.
While defending the target Salman Ali Agha and his bowlers attacked with intent. Opener Alishan Sharafu was dismissed early by Shaheen Afridi and Muhammad Waseems innings was ended by a spectacular catch by Mohammad Nawaz. UAE collapsed after losing a few early wickets to Pakistans formidable attack which made a comeback in the game very difficult.
However Rahul Chopra and Dhruv Parashar put together a partnership it wasn’t enough to get UAE close to the target. Pakistan quickly dismantled the lower order bowling them out for 105 in the 18th over securing a convincing 41-run victory and a spot in the Super Four.
With both India and Pakistan advancing to the next stage Pakistan’s next challenge will be against their arch-rivals. The Men in Green will aim to deliver a stronger performance against Suryakumar Yadav and his team this time looking to turn the tables in their favor.
