As kids, we had a very different idea of what counted as luxury. Some things felt so exclusive and fancy that we assumed only the rich had them—only to grow up and realize they were completely normal. Here are 10 things we all thought were high-class, but actually weren’t.
1. Having a fridge with an ice dispenser
If someone’s fridge had a built-in ice dispenser, we knew they were living large. Why bother with boring old ice trays when you could get crushed or cubed ice straight from the door?
2. Getting lunch from the school canteen instead of a home-packed lunch
Nothing screamed wealth like buying a fresh, hot meal at school instead of eating a sandwich from home. Bonus points if you got a soft drink with it.
3. Owning a TV in your bedroom
A TV in the living room? Normal. A TV in your room? Elite. If you had one, you were basically a celebrity among your friends.
4. Rolling backpacks
These seemed like the Rolls-Royce of school supplies. No back pain, no heavy lifting—just effortless rolling. (But let’s be real, they were also a tripping hazard.)
5. Branded snacks in your lunchbox
If your lunchbox had actual Oreos, Lay’s, or Capri Sun instead of off-brand versions, you were basically royalty. The rest of us had to make do with “chocolate sandwich biscuits.”
6. Owning a lava lamp
Nothing screamed luxury like a glowing lava lamp on your bedside table. It didn’t really do anything, but it made your room feel like a VIP lounge.
7. Ordering soft drinks at restaurants
Most of us were used to being told, “You’ll have water.” So, when a kid was allowed to order Coke with refills, we knew their family had made it.
8. Staying at a hotel with a pool
If your vacation included a hotel pool, you were basically vacationing in paradise. The idea of swimming and sleeping in the same place? Unmatched.
9. Going to the mall just for fun
If your family went to the mall without actually needing anything—just to roam around or eat at the food court—you were fancy.
10. Getting a birthday party at McDonald’s
Having a birthday party at McDonald’s (with Happy Meals and a play area) was basically the peak of childhood luxury.
What did you think was fancy as a kid?
