New Delhi: Sachin Yadav emerged as India’s new talent at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo on Thursday, eclipsing the likes of Neeraj Chopra and Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem. Though Neeraj’s crashing out of the event was a big setback for India but Sachin Yadav managed to wipe all the tears of the nation with a brilliant performance at the Tokyo event.
After making his debut in 2024, Sachin, who hails from Uttar Pradesh, took no time in proving his mettle at the biggest stage of javelin event on Thursday. Neeraj unfortunately crashed out of the event finishing at the eighth position while Nadeem was eliminated after a shoddy show, it was Sachin who managed to grab all the limelight at the global event.
Among all the Asian contenders at the big event, Sachin with his personal best throw of 86.27m in his first two attempts managed to finish fourth, though missing on a medal by just a whisker. The other Asian at the event, Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Tharanga also threw his personal best throw of 84.38m but finished at the seventh spot, much below the 25-year-old Indian athlete.
Among all the javelin throwers, 2025 Asian Championships silver medallist Sachin consistently touched the 85m mark in all throws with just a single one ending in a foul. While his first two throws were recorded at 86.27m, his third throw ended in a foul but the Indian javelin thrower came back in his fourth and fifth attempt with throws of 85.71 and 84.90 respectively.
Born in Khekra, Uttar Pradesh, 25-year-old Sachin Yadav’s journey in the world of sports was full of twists and turns. The 6.5 feet athlete, who is an admirer of MS Dhoni and Jasprit Bumrah, first wanted to become a cricketer and represent India. It was one of his family members who recognised his ability for javelin throw and pushed him towards the sport.
In his debut year in 2024, Sachin started off on a glorious note as he bagged a gold medal at the National Open Athletics Championships with a throw of 80.04 meters. In the current year, he continued his supremacy with gold medals at the Federation Cup and National Games with throws of 83.86m and 84.39m respectively. His current feat at the World Athletics Championships happens to the latest feather in his cap.
At the Asian Athletics Championships in South Korea in 2025, Sachin finished at the second position with a throw of 85.16 meters competing against top throwers like Arshad Nadeem of Pakistan. At the Neeraj Chopra Classic invitational event earlier in the year, Sachin recorded a best throw of 82.33 m finishing at the fourth spot.
