The highly anticipated sequel to the blockbuster sci-fi fantasy Kalki 2898 AD will proceed without Deepika Padukone, the filmmakers have announced. The first installment, starring Deepika alongside Prabhas, Amitabh Bachchan, and Disha Patani, was a major success at the box office, and fans had eagerly awaited her return.
Vyjayanthi Movies, the production house behind the film, officially confirmed Deepika’s exit on the film’s social media account. The statement indicated that despite extensive discussions, the team was unable to secure the level of commitment they expected from the actress for the sequel.
The announcement read, “This is to officially announce that @deepikapadukone will not be a part of the upcoming sequel of #Kalki2898AD. After careful consideration, we have decided to part ways. Despite the long journey of making the first film, we were unable to find a partnership. A film like @Kalki2898AD deserves that commitment and much more. We wish her the best in her future projects.”
Deepika’s absence has surprised fans, especially given her key role in the original film. The decision follows a similar situation in her earlier project Spirit, also starring Prabhas, where she reportedly left due to disagreements over work schedules, profit sharing, and language requirements. Triptii Dimri had replaced her in that film.
The announcement has sparked speculation about possible replacements for the sequel. Names like Keerthy Suresh and Kalyani Priyadarshan have been suggested by fans, though reactions are mixed. Some supporters expressed disappointment over Deepika’s exit, while others welcomed the news and urged director Nag Ashwin to proceed carefully to avoid backlash from her fans.
