Bus drivers in Greater Manchester are on strike, with up to two thirds of the public bus network planned to be off the roads on Friday as the first in a series of planned strikes is due to start. School buses will also be affected, although they will continue to run in Wigan and Bolton. Commuters without easy access to Metrolink and railway stations are expected to be hit the hardest.

More than 2,000 members of the union Unite who work under the Bee Network umbrella are set to walk out in a co-ordinated strike over pay. This marks the first strike to affect the Bee Network since Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham brought buses back under public control. Staff at three Bee Network bus operators - First, Metroline and Stagecoach - are set to strike from Friday through Monday. Additional walkouts have been announced for 30 September to 2 October. The action coincides with a busy weekend in Manchester, including Manchester United's clash with Chelsea on Saturday and several major concerts.
