Born on 20 September 1948 in Mumbai Mahesh Bhatt’s early life was far from easy. His father Nanabhai Bhatt a filmmaker never married his mother Shirin Mohammad Ali leaving young Mahesh to face social taunts. Financial struggles only added to his determination to carve a name for himself.
With no strong connections in the film world he walked into Mehboob Studio with sheer passion. To secure work he told a small lie—that he knew director Raj Khosla. When questioned Bhatt admitted the truth. Instead of being offended Raj Khosla appreciated his honesty and hired him as an assistant. That moment marked the true beginning of Mahesh Bhatt’s cinematic journey.
Which films defined his career?
Mahesh Bhatt made his directorial debut in 1974 with Manzilein Aur Bhi Hain. His breakthrough came with powerful films like Arth Naam Awargi and Kashmakash. In 1984 his critically acclaimed film Saaransh was even sent to the Oscars cementing his reputation as a filmmaker who reflected society’s raw truths.
In the 1990s Bhatt launched his own banner Vishesh Films producing a string of successful movies such as Raaz Murder Jism Jannat and Aashiqui 2. These films not only did big business but also introduced fresh faces to the industry. His 1998 film Zakhm earned him a National Award while Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke Tamanna and Gudia also brought critical recognition.

Off-screen Mahesh Bhatt’s personal life was as eventful as his films. He married twice—first to Kiran Bhatt with whom he had actress Pooja Bhatt and Rahul Bhatt and later to actress Soni Razdan with whom he shares daughters Alia Bhatt and Shaheen Bhatt.
While Shaheen chose a private life away from the industry Pooja Bhatt made her mark in the 90s and Alia Bhatt today is one of Bollywood’s leading actresses. Rahul however could not replicate the same success in films.
