India’s largest IT company Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has issued a statement regarding reports about its Bhopal office. Over the past few days there was speculation that the company was shutting down its Bhopal operations putting nearly 1000 jobs at risk. TCS has now clarified that these reports are completely false. The company explained “We regularly review our infrastructure needs across different cities. As part of this process our Bhopal office has been shifted to Indore. No employee has lost their job and all reports about layoffs are baseless.”
Reports claimed 1000 employees affected
Earlier some reports had claimed that the closure of the Bhopal centre could impact about 1000 employees with some workers already receiving transfer notices. The issue gained further attention when Madhya Pradesh Finance Minister and Deputy Chief Minister Jagdish Deora wrote to TCS CEO K. Krithivasan urging him to reconsider the decision. He warned that such a move could hurt Bhopal’s IT ecosystem and the local economy.
TCS confirms office shift to Indore
TCS also said that it is committed to strengthening its presence in Madhya Pradesh. The company already has a world-class campus in Indore where more than 10000 professionals are working and there are plans to expand further in the coming years.
This means employees can be assured that their jobs are safe. However the incident also highlights a bigger challenge: tier-2 cities in India still find it difficult to retain large IT companies for the long term.
