In what is a truly horrid time for British households, spider mating season has arrived, which means swarms of the pests are set to unwantedly invade our homes. It tends to take place between late August and early October, a time that sees a scary surge in infestations.

The situation is not helped by the horrible weather that continues to hit the UK, with heavy rain forecast to hammer the country . This drives spiders indoors as they attempt to shelter from the harsh conditions. Despite this, however, there are things we can do to keep them out of your home. Alastair Mayne, Chief Operating Officer at Garolla - an electric garage door company - has detailed four key tips we all can follow to drive spiders away in the safest way possible.

Use natural repellents

If you're looking for an easy way to repel spiders from the comfort of your own home, you can use a range of essential oils and ingredients to keep them at bay. For example, they hate peppermint, tea tree, and eucalyptus oil.

"They contain compounds that disrupt the spiders' natural senses and pheromones," explained Alastair Mayne.

"The strong scent of some essential oils, like menthol, can also replicate plants that spiders tend to avoid because they associate them with danger."

All you have to do is spray these essential oils over doorways and windows in your house and garage, which shoud be enough to prevent spiders from entering.

Plus, these are not harmful for the insect or your property, and it could do a good job in making sure they never return.

Make sure your windows are closed

To put it simply, spiders will find it more difficult to get inside if you close all possible entrances, namely windows, especially during rainy weather.

Alistair added: "The UK is getting colder, and spiders are looking for warm, dry spaces to mate. You can even seal your windows with mesh, screens, or sealant to really keep them out.

"It's also important to keep an eye on vents, or cracks under doors, as spiders are small enough to fit in the tiniest of spaces."

Declutter your space

Clutter is the perfect home for spiders, especially in a garage where you may store furniture, boxes and other debris.

"By getting rid of clutter in your home or garage, you're eliminating potential nests for spiders, meaning there is less place for them to hide or set up home," said Alistair.

Watch out for moisture

Spiders are attracted to warm and damp environments, so it's incredibly important to keep an eye out for any areas like this in your home that could be a homing beacon for the creepy crawlies.

Alistair continued: "This is because moist areas provide hydration, but also, they are the perfect environment for spiders to maintain their webs' flexibility and durability.

"Similarly, moisture attracts other pests, like mosquitos and silverfish, which are spiders' favourite prey."
