There is a stunning trail that runs through three countries, taking in gorgeous scenery, including mountains and a serene lake. It is rare that you can go on holiday and experience three countries pretty much all at once, but that is the case here. This stunning lake is located in Central Europe and is surrounded by three countries, all of which are connected by a cycle path that runs around the lake.
Lake Constance is perhaps the most underrated lake in Europe and connects Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The lake is surrounded by scenic resort towns that offer tourists plenty of things to do and see, with the natural setting being the biggest draw for visitors to this scenic place. This lake is just as scenic as more famous spots like Lake Garda or Lake Como, but it is not as well-known. In fact, National Geographic recently named it the most worthy lake to visit in Europe.
The Lake Constance Cycle Route connects all three countries surrounding the lake and can be completed in under a week. However, shorter stretches between countries can be completed in stages, and other transport options are available for getting from one resort town to another.
The travel experts at Lonely Planet praise Lake Constance because tourists can "wake up in Germany, cycle across to Switzerland for lunch and make it to Austria in time for afternoon tea, strudel and snapshots of the Alps".
There are plenty of towns in which you can stay while visiting Lake Constance. In Germany, there are Lindau, Friedrichshafen, Konstanz and Uberlingen. Meanwhile, Kreuzlingen in Switzerland and Bregenz in Austria are also great options.
Tourists have had overwhelmingly positive things to say about the lake's cycle path in the past. One TripAdvisor reviewer said: "Stretching across Germany, Switzerland and Austria, the scenery is breathtaking. We rented bikes to ride around the lake, with picturesque orchards and vineyards along the way. Enjoy dinner in a lakeside town in the evening and enjoy the sunset."
Another shared: "We were really lucky with the weather. This time we decided to go to the eastern part and travelled from Friedrichshafen to Bregenz. We would be happy to do it again any time."
A third shared: "We did a cycling tour of the lake. 165 miles starting and ending from Konstanz over 6 days. What an amazing experience. Excellent cycle paths - good smooth surfaces, great signage and not too hilly! We did the tour through Radweig Reisen and were really impressed with their communication, their tour literature and excellent quality bikes."
A fourth said: "So much bigger when you are near. One of the famous European lakes. So many places to visit with amazing views. You could spend a whole holiday just travelling around it."
Lake Constance is just one example of what Germany has to offer as a travel destination. The country is also home to underrated towns and cities that many British tourists haven't heard of.
