A Suitable Boy is a British television drama miniseries directed by Mira Nair and adapted by Andrew Davies from Vikram Seth's 1993 novel of the same name. It is set in the backdrop of post-independent India, and follows four linked families in North India, where the story revolves around Mrs. Rupa Mehra who is in search of a suitable husband for her youngest daughter Lata. Meanwhile, the daughter is torn between her duty towards her mother and the idea of romance with her potential suitors.
The series stars Tanya Maniktala, Ishaan Khatter, Rasika Dugal, Mahira Kakkar, Ram Kapoor, Namit Das, Vivaan Shah, Mikhail Sen, Danesh Rizvi, Shahana Goswami, Ranvir Shorey, Vijay Varma and Kulbhushan Kharbanda in prominent roles, alongside many others as the story features more than 110 characters.
A Suitable Boy made history as the first BBC period drama series to have a non-white cast.
The series synopsis reads: "The BBC series A Suitable Boy follows 19-year-old university student Lata Mehra's coming-of-age in North India in 1951, a time of political change after India's independence. While Lata seeks love and self-discovery, navigating a forbidden romance with a Muslim student, her widowed mother, Mrs. Rupa Mehra, is determined to arrange her marriage to a "suitable boy". The story interweaves the personal lives of Lata and her family with the turbulent broader narrative of a newly independent India, exploring themes of tradition versus modernity, social issues, and the growing divisions between communities."
The series received a mixed response from critics, who praised the performances of the cast and the settings, but criticised the stereotypical portrayal of India, as well as the writing and direction.
Despite this, fans have praised the series, with one labelling the period drama as "groundbreaking".
One viewer left a rave review: "Dazed after completing the watching of The Suitable Boy on Netflix. A story that is simple yet touching and set in a world that seems very relatable. A story suffused with convoluted feelings of friendship, first love, family pressure, and of the world, so set in the early years of independence, that is India, that we since our childhood have grown up seeing and reflecting back upon as a society.
"Surely, a series that I dream of revisiting in the future to bask again in the same warmth I felt today after completion. And if it helps, The background score is great too. Anoushka Shankar's sitar sets the undertone to the story and scenes, and at times its sweetness and sharpness are enough to wrench your heart and fill your eyes with tears!!"
A Suitable Boy is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
