Saif Hasan and Towhid Hridoy scored impressive fifties after Mustafizur Rahman and Mahedi Hasan gave Bangladesh a strong start with the ball helping their team defeat Sri Lanka by four wickets in the opening Super 4 match of the Mens T20 Asia Cup 2025 on Saturday. How did Bangladesh perform? Before this match Bangladesh had managed to win only one of their last 14 run chases. But this time they showed great form with Saif hitting 61 off 45 balls and Hridoy making 58 off 37 as they successfully chased down 169 with one ball to spare finishing at 169/6 in 19.5 overs. This win also gave them payback for their earlier six-wicket loss to Sri Lanka in the group stage. Who scored a fifty for Sri Lanka? The bowlers set up the win first. Sri Lanka led by a brilliant unbeaten 64 off 38 balls from Dasun Shanaka posted a solid total of 168/7 in their 20 overs. For Bangladesh Mustafizur Rahman took 3 wickets for 20 runs including two in the second-last over while Mahedi Hasan picked up 2 for 25 in his comeback game. How did Bangladesh bat? Bangladesh lost Tanzid Hasan for a duck but recovered well in the Power-play to reach 59/1 slightly ahead of Sri Lanka’s 53/1 at the same stage. Saif Hasan started strongly with a few quick boundaries and got good support from captain Litton Das. The pair added 59 runs for the second wicket. But just when they looked in control Das was out for 23 off 16 balls dismissed by Wanindu Hasaranga. Saif continued his steady scoring and reached his half-century in 36 balls. With Hridoy batting confidently at the other end Bangladesh crossed 100. Saif eventually fell for 61 (2 fours 4 sixes) again to Hasaranga. Hridoy then took charge reaching his fifty in 31 balls. He kept the scoreboard moving and pushed Bangladesh close to the target. He was eventually out lbw to Chameera after missing a full toss. The chase got tense when Bangladesh needed 5 runs from the final over. Jaker Ali hit a four on the first ball but two wickets fell in the next three balls. Finally Nasum Ahmed ran a single to finish the job. What about Sri Lankas batting? Earlier Dasun Shanaka’s counter-attacking fifty had rescued Sri Lanka from trouble. After a good start from Pathum Nissanka (22) and Kusal Mendis (34) Sri Lanka collapsed to 97/4. Mahedi Hasan took two key wickets during that phase. Shanaka then turned things around with a quickfire 64 not out from 37 balls including six sixes and three fours. His 57-run stand with Asalanka (21 off 12) gave Sri Lanka a strong finish. However Mustafizur’s two wickets in the 19th over and Taskin Ahmed’s tight last over (four dot balls) helped limit Sri Lanka to 168 when they looked likely to get close to 190. Those two overs made a big difference and Bangladesh made the most of it with a solid chase to win by four wickets. Highlights: Saif Hasan and Towhid Hridoy scored impressive fifties for Bangladesh.
