Making pizza at home is one of life's simple pleasures, but for many, the idea comes with one big drawback as not everyone has a high-powered oven that can mimic a pizzeria's fiery heat. For those short on equipment, or just short on time, Jamie Oliver says there's no need to miss out.
His recipe proves you can achieve crispy, golden, cheesy pizza perfection in nothing more than a frying pan. The celebrity chef describes his creation as "naughty but very nice," a cheats' version that's ready in less time than a delivery order and costs as little as 80p per portion.
"It's going to be a fraction of the price and we're not even going to turn the oven on, it's all happening in the pan," Oliver explained.
His method swaps traditional yeast dough for a quick mix of self-raising flour, water and salt.
The dough comes together in minutes, no proving required, before being pressed straight into a hot pan where it begins to puff and crisp.
"You've got sponginess, you've got a crispy base," Oliver said. "It's still pizza, it's still got love, it's just breaking a few rules."
The toppings are equally straightforward with sauteed red onion and peppers cooked until sweet and soft under a lid, a generous spoonful of tinned tomatoes, and plenty of grated cheddar.
Once the base is flipped, the toppings are layered on and the pizza cooks through with the lid back on until the cheese is bubbling and oozy.
Served with a quick salad of crisp lettuce and shaved carrot, Oliver insists the dish delivers on flavour while being budget-friendly and time-saving.
"Much cheaper than the takeaway, much faster than the takeaway," he said. "Naughty, but very nice. And what's not to love?"
With its mix of speed, affordability and comfort-food appeal, Oliver's one-pan pizza could become a weeknight favourite, proof that you don't need a fancy oven to enjoy a homemade slice.
