Relationships in Bollywood often begin with shooting sets, but some stories are so interesting that they are remembered even after years. One such anecdote is attached to the wedding of Akshay Kumar and Twinkle Khanna, in whose background the role of a flop film is said to be – and that film was Aamir Khan’s ‘Mela’ (2000).
In an interview recently, Akshay Kumar himself revealed that the path of his marriage was indirectly passed through this film.
What is a ‘fair’ connection?
Twinkle Khanna played the lead role in the film ‘Mela’ released in 2000. The film proved to be a bad flop at the box office. But the interesting thing is that before marriage, Twinkle jokingly told Akshay, “If the ‘fair’ flopped, I will marry you!”
Akshay laughed and said, “I was praying that the film did not go away. And the same happened. The film flopped and Twinkle made his promise.”
How did the relationship start?
Akshay and Twinkle met during a photoshoot. The conversation between the two increased and then friendship turned into love. However, Twinkle was not serious about the relationship in the beginning.
“Our relationship was not a long affair,” Akshay said. “But when Twinkle talked about marriage in the ‘fair’, that joke became reality.”
A personal and simplicity marriage
Akshay Kumar and Twinkle Khanna were married on 17 January 2001 at a very private ceremony. Family and very close friends attended the wedding. At that time Akshay was on his career peak and Twinkle distanced himself from films after marriage.
Twinkle is now a successful writer, interior designer and columnist, while Akshay is still counted among Bollywood’s busiest actors.
What happened to ‘Mela’?
Let me tell you that ‘Mela’ was an action-drama film by Aamir Khan and his brother Faisal Khan, which also featured Twinkle Khanna in the lead role. The film received a cold response from the audience and failed at the box office. However, the film unknowingly added the personal life of two stars permanently.
