Kolkata Faces Heavy Rainfall and Flooding
On Monday, Kolkata experienced significant rainfall, resulting in waterlogging across various parts of the city. Reports indicate that the city recorded 247.4 mm of rain since 8:30 AM, according to the Regional Meteorological Centre in Kolkata.
As a result of the downpour, schools were closed on Tuesday, and numerous areas faced power outages. Water intrusion was reported in homes and residential complexes.
Metro services were suspended on multiple routes due to the adverse weather conditions. Social media platforms were flooded with videos and images showcasing submerged roads and vehicles.
The India Meteorological Department announced that a low-pressure system over the northeast Bay of Bengal is expected to bring further heavy rainfall to several southern districts of West Bengal on Tuesday.
Forecasts indicate that districts such as East and West Midnapore, South 24 Parganas, Jhargram, and Bankura will likely experience heavy rain until Wednesday.
Additionally, another low-pressure area is anticipated to develop over the east-central and adjacent north Bay of Bengal around September 25, potentially evolving into a depression by September 26.
In light of the severe weather, airlines have issued warnings regarding potential delays. IndiGo noted that heavy rain has affected some routes in Kolkata, advising travelers to plan accordingly and allow extra time for their journeys.
SpiceJet also cautioned passengers that all flights may be impacted due to the adverse weather conditions in Kolkata, urging them to check their flight statuses regularly.
