In a terrible revelation of the misuse of power, former director of Sri Sharda Institute of Indian Management, Vasant Kunj, Delhi, Swayambhu religious leader Swami Chaitanyanand Saraswati has been accused of sexual harassment of more than 17 girl students. This case, which shook the entire country, is aroused from an FIR lodged on August 4 for sexual harassment, hurting women’s dignity and criminal intimidation at Vasant Kunj (North) Police Station on August 4.
These allegations present a terrible picture of systematic exploitation with students receiving scholarships of the Economically Weaker Class (EWS). During the festival of Holi, the victims allege that they were forced to stand in queue, bending and originally the Partha Sarathi of Odisha – chanting “Hariom” and was forced to color their cheeks and hair first. Subsequently, the accused conducted a thorough examination of students’ sexual history, condoms use and relationships and often publicly humiliated them.
Worse, Saraswati allegedly installed CCTV cameras hidden in the name of safety measures near girls hostels and toilets in the campus to keep an eye on the victims through their phones. Till late night, scary messages such as “Baby, I Love You” and “You are looking very beautiful” were sent to WhatsApp, which increased to the demand for her coming to her quarters at midnight. Reverse action was taken on refusal: forged appearance records, low marks, stopped certificates, and even a ransom of Rs 15,000 for documents of a student. Forcible trips-Rishikesh’s domestic walks and abroad travel-a trap for uncharted love affairs, and the families were threatened and refused to obey them.
Three women employees, including the Associate Dean, are accused of promoting this horrific incident by pressuring the students to erase evidence and by running the arbitrariness of Saraswati. A victim was also forced to change her name at her behest. The letter of an alumnus and an email of a group captain of the Indian Air Force warned the institute about this “anti -retraction” trend, after which a virtual session was held in which 32 students shared complete information.
This is not the first case with Saraswati; His previous complaints made in 2009 and 2016 failed among the evading. Now absconding, a lookout circular is keeping an eye on them as raids are going on in the states. New allegations of fraud and forgery – including a seized Volvo car with fake diplomatic plates – are making the case more complicated.
Mr. Sharda Peetham, Sringeri has broken ties with him, condemned his “illegal” acts and lodged complaints. During the investigation of footage tampered with forensic, the victims are demanding justice, which is highlighting the immediate need for security measures in educational institutions. This saga underlines how the rights wrapped in spirituality can hide hunting – this is a warning for institutional accountability.
