House of Guinness is on Netflix and the historical drama follows the Guinness siblings following the death of their father. Anthony Boyle plays the eldest son, Arthur Guinness, with Louis Partridge as his brother Edward.

Following their father's funeral, Aunt Agnes (played by Dervla Kirwan) is keen to find out about Benjamin Lee's will and - crucially - whether she has been gifted anything.

When Arthur and Edward inform her she is unlikely to have been mentioned in the will, she offers them some stern words.

Wanting the brothers to continue Benjamin Lee's legacy, she wonders if it has already become apparent who is "Ogma" and who is "The Dagda".

Arthur has no idea who she is talking about, so Edward informs him the names refer to two brothers in Irish mythology. Here is all you need to know about the story behind Ogma and The Dagda.

Ogma is a god from both Irish and Scottish mythology, who was a member of the Tuatha Dé Danann - a supernatural race.

It is believed he was the inventor of Ogham, the script in which Irish Gaelic was first written.

Ogma is described as being "sun-faced” as well as a "strongman" and "champion", and he was said to have been skilled in speech and poetry.

Irish Mythology Stories explained: "Ogma is often depicted as a warrior with immense physical strength and prowess in battle.

"However, his most distinctive attribute is his mastery of language and eloquence. He is considered the deity of speech, poetry, and knowledge. This combination of martial and intellectual skills makes Ogma a versatile and multifaceted character in Irish mythology."

The Dagda is sometimes referred to as Ogma's brother, but in other cases he is the father of Ogma.

He is the chief god of the Tuatha Dé Danann who is associated with fertility, agriculture, masculinity and strength.

The Dagda's name is thought to mean "the good god" or "the great god".

The Irish Pagan School explained how these terms were not regarding his morality, but more an acknowledgment of his ability to be “good” at everything.

Dagda had many powers and possessed a caldron that was never empty, fruit trees that were never barren, and he had a huge club that had the power both to kill men and to restore them to life.
