TCS Layoffs: Amid the backlash over large-scale layoffs Tata Groups Tata Consultancy Services (TCS)-- Indias largest IT services exporter-- has been accused of forcing around 2500 employees in to resign from their positions.
How TCS forced workers to resign?
In a letter to Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis Nascent Information Technology Employees Senate (NITES) an umbrella body of IT employees alleged that TCS forced 2500 workers to resign even as the IT giant refuted the allegations asserting that only a limited number of employees have been affected by our recent initiative to realign skills in our organisation.
In the letter to Fadnavis NITES president Harpreet Singh Saluja sought timely intervention from the state government to protect the interests of the affected employees noting that Union Labour Ministry has directed the Maharashtra labour secretary to take necessary action in the matter.
Sadly despite this directive the ground reality has become even more distressing. In Pune alone nearly 2500 employees have been forced to resign or have been abruptly removed in recent weeks the employees body said.
What did TCS say?
Meanwhile TCS has termed the charges levelled by NITES as inaccurate misinformation asserting that only a limited number of employees have been affected by our recent initiative to realign skills in our organisation adding that the affected employees have been provided due care and severance as is due to them in each of the individual circumstances.
However NITES alleged that TCS layoffs violated Industrial Disputes Act 1947 as no notice has been given to the government in this regard.
NITES has alleged that the terminations by TCS are being carried out in blatant violation of the Industrial Disputes Act 1947 as no notice has been given to the government in this regard. It also claimed that TCS has not paid any statutory retrenchment compensation to the employees and staff are being coerced into voluntary resignations under fear and pressure.
IT workers body demands protection against unlawful terminations
The IT employees body asked the Maharashtra CM to ensure affected employees are given their lawful rights under the Industrial Disputes Act 1947 halt all further terminations until due legal process is followed and hold the companys top management accountable for their disregard of law and humanity.
Many of those affected are mid- to senior-level professionals who have given 10-20 years of dedicated service to the company. A large number are over 40 years of age burdened with EMIs school fees medical expenses and responsibilities towards ageing parents. For them finding alternative employment in today’s competitive market is almost impossible NITES said.
It said that the education of children of affected employees is at risk and loans may go unpaid and households face emotional trauma and financial collapse.
TCS layoffs
The fresh allegations against TCS come amid the backlash over large scale layoffs it had announced in June under which the IT firm plans to cut 2 percent of its global workforce this year affecting about 12261 workers.
TCS layoffs the largest in the history of India’s IT industry will affect workers from all countries and domains where the company is operational. The TCS layoffs are likely to be conducted between April 2025 and March 2026 and will mainly impact employees belonging to middle and senior grades.
