Indias Test captain Shubman Gill said on Wednesday that fast bowler Jasprit Bumrahs role in the upcoming Test series against the West Indies will be decided before each match. Shubman Gill explained that whether Jasprit Bumrah plays or not will depend on how many overs he bowls in a game and how well he recovers afterwards. How did Jasprit Bumrah come into the talk? This topic came up often in England earlier this year after it was announced before the Anderson-Tendulkar series that Jasprit Bumrah would take part in only three of the five Test matches to help manage his fitness and workload. What did Shubman Gill say about Jasprit Bumrah? Were going to take a call on a match-to-match basis depending on how long a Test match goes on and how many overs our fast bowlers bowl. Nothing is pre-decided. Were going to take the call once the Test match is over and how our fast bowlers feel and how their bodies feel after the match Shubman Gill told the media. India will face West Indies in a two-Test series beginning on Thursday October 2 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. How is Shubman Gills Cricket currently? Gill had an up-and-down year in both Test and limited-overs cricket. He was made Indias Test captain in May 2025 after the Indian Premier League ended and led the team in a five-match series against England. He started his captaincy journey impressively hitting four centuries in the series. After that he was chosen as the vice-captain of Indias T20 squad for the Asia Cup. Switching between formats was challenging for him going from red-ball cricket in England to white-ball matches in the UAE for the Asia Cup and then back to red-ball cricket again just three days after winning the T20 tournament. Gill said that moving from T20s to Test matches is one of the toughest transitions in cricket. Despite the quick turnaround Gill had an excellent Test series finishing as the top scorer with 754 runs in 10 innings averaging 75.40. He scored four hundreds including a marathon 269 and 161 in Indias first-ever win at Birmingham in the second Test. In contrast his Asia Cup performance was below par. He managed only 127 runs averaging 21.16. The pitches in the UAE were slower and helped spinners forcing batters to play more carefully. What were Shubman Gills statements? Shubman Gill mentioned that for batters the challenge isnt about being physically tired but more about staying mentally focused. He said hes prepared for the challenge in the upcoming Test series. When you are going from the shortest to longest I think its probably the hardest when you go from T20 to one day and then test. Its probably easier than going from test to T20 or T20 to test. And some of the things that like I said I just try to get in the zone Gill said. That zone is nothing just watching the ball well and to be able to decide the areas that you are going to for me as a batsman decide the areas which areas am I going to defend and which areas am I going to attack. And just identifying those areas and then the mental side comes in how much control and how much patience does one have to be able to stick to that process he added. For a batsman I dont think its physical fatigue. Its more mental for a batsman. Thats a little different for a bowler. As of now I feel fresh and my body is ready. I am just looking at what I have to do this week and next week and thats how I will be making my decisions he concluded.
