New Delhi: American tech giant Google has once again laid off hundreds of employees. These layoffs come as Google is increasing its focus on artificial intelligence (AI) to reduce costs. According to reports the company has laid off more than 100 employees working in design-related positions in its cloud unit. Which teams are affected? According to a CNBC report the layoffs have hit the Quantitative User Experience Research and Platform and Service Experience teams the hardest. These teams primarily work to understand user behaviour conduct surveys and data research and incorporate them into product development. Google has reduced the size of its cloud design teams by as much as half in some cases. The largest number of layoffs has occurred among employees working in the USA. According to reports Google has given the laid-off employees until December to find new jobs. Why are layoffs happening? Googles move comes as the company is rapidly moving towards artificial intelligence (AI). The company has been offering voluntary retirement packages to employees at several of its US-based units since the beginning of 2025. Managers overseeing small teams are being laid off. Employees are being asked to integrate AI more deeply into their work. Google has implemented layoffs and buyouts in several divisions including HR hardware ads search finance and commerce over the past few months. Sundar Pichai had hinted at layoffs The companys CEO Sundar Pichai has repeatedly warned employees that Google needs to become more efficient than ever as we scale up. His statement clearly indicates that these layoffs are part of the companys long-term strategy. Google has invested heavily in AI infrastructure in recent months keeping it ahead of its rivals like Microsoft and Meta. A wave of layoffs in the tech sector Google isnt the only tech company implementing layoffs. Microsoft previously laid off 9000 employees in July. Meta the parent company of Facebook Instagram and WhatsApp has been implementing phased layoffs since 2023. In India TCS also recently announced the layoff of approximately 12000 employees representing approximately 2 per cent of its total workforce.
