New Delhi: Rahul Gandhi took aim at the Union government at an event in Colombia by saying that the biggest challenge India is witnessing "is the attack" on its democracy.

According to reports from Colombia, Gandhi, in his address to students at EIA University of Colombia on Thursday, pointed to the issue of "structural flaws" of the Indian system while stressing on the need for the country to thrive with its diverse traditions. "India has strong capabilities in areas like engineering and healthcare. So, I am very optimistic about the country but at the same time there are flaws in the structure that India has to correct. The biggest challenge is the attack on democracy taking place in India", he said.

"India has multiple religions, traditions and languages. In fact, the country is essentially a conversation between all these people and cultures. Different traditions, religions and ideas require space and the best method for creating the space is the democratic system. Currently, there is a wholesale attack on this democracy system and this is a major risk. Another big risk is the tension between different conceptions in parts of the country. With 16-17 major languages and many religions, it is crucial to allow this diverse tradition to thrive and give them the space they need," he added. Targeting RSS, Gandhi alleged "cowardice" was at the heart of its ideology.

Talking about the global economic power play, Gandhi said the world is now witnessing a shift to electronic motors and battery technology with China and the US vying to control the transition. "China is winning so far" Gandhi said, noting that India sits right in the middle of this clash between maritime and land-based powers. Asked about the possibility of China and India emerging as the world leaders in the next 50 years, Gandhi said while India does not indulge in such competition, India's decentralised diverse structure and its deep spiritual tradition give it unique strength compared to China's centralised model. "India can't suppress its people like China".

Rahul says anything in India, cries no democracy abroad: BJP

Reacting to Gandhi's remarks, senior BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad said: "Rahul Gandhi says all sorts of baseless and shameless things against India in India and when he goes abroad, he says there is no freedom of speech in India."
