A girl has been left "petrified" to leave her home after being raped by a man when she was a primary school pupil. Kyran Wingfield-West, 20, admitted two counts of rape at a earing in July. On Thursday (October 2), he was sentenced to two years and eight months at a young offenders' institution at Caernarfon Crown Court. Wingfield-West was 17 when he raped the young girl, who was under 13, twice on Anglesey in Wales.
Prosecutor Jemma Gordon told the court that the sexual offence emerged after online messages were discovered. The victim's father found the text messages when his daughter became concerned about the possibly becoming pregnant from the rape. Wingfield-West reportedly told the school pupil to delete the message that they had exchanged.
In a heartbreaking statement, the victim said she has found it "really difficult" to leave her house following the rape.
The girl said she felt "petrified" of seeing the rapist again, and has since developed eating problems and has experienced friends "turning on" her.
The victim added that she is "disgusted" by Wingfield-West and what he did to her. She said she "understands now more than ever how wrong what he did was" and that the offender's guilty pleas felt like a "big weight lifted" off her.
She added that his detention has helped her to "move forward with her life".
Dafydd Roberts, representing Wingfield-West, describes him as a "naïve" man who has learning difficulties.
Mr Roberts told the court that his client had not re-offended since the sexual offence, and was 17 at the time.
He argued that a suspended sentence for the rapist, with additional requirements, would be "far more constructive" than custody.
Sentencing Judge Nicola Jones reduced Wingfield-West's sentence due to his age at the time of the offence, his guilty pleas in July and his learning difficulties.
Wingfield-West, now of Ropery Road, Gainsborough, Lincolnshire, has been ordered to adhere to the sex offenders register notification requirements and a sexual harm prevention order - both to run indefinitely.
