The Madras High Court's Madurai bench has sharply criticized the leaders of the Tamilga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) regarding the Karur stampede, stating that party chief Vijay "fled the scene" and that the party did not express any remorse. The court condemned such behavior, especially in light of the fatalities involving women and children. Justice Senthilkumar remarked that the mishandling of the incident, which resulted in the deaths of 41 individuals, reflects poorly on the mental state of the actor-politician. He noted that the state has shown leniency towards Vijay.
Justice Senthilkumar questioned both the organizers and the police about their accountability, asking, "As an event organizer, do you not have any responsibility?" The court expressed frustration over the state's leniency towards Vijay, highlighting that he was "missing" at the time of the incident.
The bench ordered the establishment of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Asra Garg to investigate the incident, while reserving orders on anticipatory bail petitions filed by TVK leaders Bussy Anand and CTR Nirmal Kumar. During the hearing regarding anticipatory bail, the state argued that the stampede was caused by the irresponsible behavior of the party's own workers. The bench emphasized that the tragedy resulted in the loss of 41 innocent lives due to a major man-made disaster, asserting that the court cannot turn a blind eye or evade its responsibilities.
The bench noted that the entire world witnessed the sequence of events and their aftermath. Citing video footage, the court pointed out that two-wheeled vehicles were trapped under the TVK bus, yet the driver failed to stop despite witnessing the chaos. The court questioned, "Isn't this a hit-and-run case? Why has no hit-and-run case been registered? Why did the police not take notice of this?"
