New Delhi: Actor and TVK chief Vijay has been under constant public scrutiny since the Karur stampede in Tamil Nadu. Many politicians are blaming him for the stampede and demanding action.
Amidst this, when Tamil Nadu Minister Durai Murugan was asked whether Vijay would be arrested in connection with the Karur stampede that killed 41 people, he said that the government would not arrest him without reason. Minister Murugan said on Saturday, 04 October 2025, that if there is evidence, the government will perform its duty. Generally, every party knows the number of people attending their events. The party should choose the venue based on its estimated audience. The state government will not unnecessarily arrest Vijay. Committee to review rally guidelines Responding to demands for changes in the conduct of political rallies, Murugan said, "We are forming a committee to decide what changes should be made. This move aims to prevent such tragedies in the future, and will include reviewing security protocols, crowd limits, and other logistical arrangements." On the Government's role Murugan, responding to criticism of the state administration for the stampede, said, "How can we be responsible? We provided police protection, granted permission, set conditions, and provided advice. Those blaming us are doing so solely for political gain." Murugan said, "RN Ravi is the Governor of Tamil Nadu, but he is speaking like an opposition leader, disregarding the dignity and decorum of the Governor's office. We do not consider him the Governor and will not pay heed to his words." Investigation and Legal Action The state police accused the TVK leadership of ignoring guidelines and violating rules. Criminal proceedings have been initiated against key party leaders, including N. Anand. This raises questions about whether party president Vijay could also be arrested. Recently, the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court criticised Vijay for leaving the scene and commented on the party's lack of remorse. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by senior IPS officer Asra Garg has been formed on the court's orders, which is conducting a thorough investigation into the stampede. Documents related to Karur have been transferred to Chennai. The court is reviewing the anticipatory bail petitions of TVK leaders and considering stricter guidelines for political rallies.
