In the 1990s there were many actors and actresses who were considered an infamous couple and among them were Madhuri Dixit and Sanjay Dutt. Their sizzling chemistry in Saajan captivated fans while rumours of their off-screen closeness only intensified the buzz. They worked on many projects. However things turned upside down when Sanjay was put behind bars due to his connection with the 1993 Mumbai blasts case. As a result a quiet distance was seen between the two. Now in an interview with Meri Saheli journalist and writer Hanif Zaveri recalled an event that took place when Sanjay was out on bail.
Hanif Zaveri who was present at the venue said “When Sanjay Dutt was in jail the film industry protested against his arrest. Madhuri refused to participate. When Sanjay was released on bail Mahaantas director Afzal Khan organised a party. Madhuri gave her word that she would attend the party.
He added I happened to be present as well. There was a stage on one side and on the other side there was a table with some chairs. This is where I was sitting. I saw Madhuri enter with her secretary and a few others but instead of going up to the stage they stopped and took seats near me.”
The journalist noted that Madhuri Dixit appeared uncomfortable about going on stage after noticing Sanjay Dutt was already seated there.
He revealed that during the event he noticed that people were anxious and instead of going on the stage Madhuri along with her team got up and left the venue.
All the photographers were waiting to capture Madhuri and Sanjays first photo together after his arrest. I knew why she left; Madhuri didnt want to be photographed with Sanjay” Hanif Zaveri shared.
The film journalist also shared some background on their relationship revealing that Madhuri and Sanjay were once very close. Her family particularly her mother Snehlata Dixit hoped she would settle down soon. However when Sanjay became entangled in legal troubles Madhuri chose to distance herself from him.
