In the Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir, a police officer has been apprehended for allegedly soliciting a bribe from a detainee under the Public Safety Act (PSA). Authorities confirmed the arrest on Saturday.
According to a spokesperson from the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), the officer, Mahroof Ahmed, who is stationed at the Mahore police station, was caught red-handed demanding and accepting an amount of 8,000 rupees in the presence of independent witnesses.
The victim, who is a detainee, reported that after being arrested in a case, a local court granted him bail on September 25, contingent upon his daily attendance at the Mahore police station between 10 AM and 4 PM.
However, during this period, Ahmed allegedly harassed the complainant, detaining him beyond the stipulated time and demanding a bribe of 8,000 rupees for his release. The bribe was reportedly paid inside the police station on October 1.
The spokesperson further revealed that two days later, the accused officer threatened the complainant and his associate again, demanding an additional 12,000 rupees for the return of their tractor and timely release.
Ahmed allegedly warned that failure to pay would result in the filing of a PSA case against the detainee, although he later reduced the amount to 8,000 rupees.
After refusing to make further payments, the complainant reached out to the ACB. Following an investigation into the complaint, a case was registered under the relevant sections, leading to the officer's arrest through a sting operation.
