At least three people were hospitalized after a fire ripped through the waterfront home of South Carolina Circuit Court Judge Diana Goodstein and her husband, ex-Democratic state Senator Arnold Goodstein, on Saturday (October 4, 2025), authorities claimed, according to reports.
According to the Post and Courier, Diana Goodstein’s Edisto Beach home went up in flames around midday, sending plumes of black smoke into the air. The blaze forced her husband to jump from the first floor to escape the blaze, The Post and Courier reported.
Tom Peterson, a resident, told the news outlet that Arnold, along with two additional occupants, was rescued by several neighbors and paramedics from a marshy, remote area behind the three-story home.
Diana Goodstein, 69, had been walking on a beach with her dogs at the time of the incident, Peterson said. The individuals were reached by emergency workers in kayaks, according to the St. Paul’s Fire District.
Occupants rescued and rushed to hospital
According to Cpt. KC Campbell with the Colleton County Fire Rescue, one of the occupants was air-evacuated to the Medical University of South Carolina. On the other hand, the other two occupants were brought to the Medical University of South Carolina on the ground.
Arnold was airlifted to the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) in Charleston after he appeared to have sustained multiple broken bones in his hips, legs, and feet following his fall, FitsNews, citing sources close to Goodstein’s family. The condition of all three escapees wasn’t immediately known.
South Carolina native Judge Diane Goodstein and her husband, Arnold, share two children, Arnold Samuel Goodstein II and Eve Schafer Goodstein, according to Diana’s biography page. As the State Law Enforcement Division continues to actively investigate the incident, it is not yet clear what caused the large property to burn to the ground.
