Supermoon 2025: On the night of 6 October, a very beautiful and amazing astronomical scene will appear in the sky, when our moon will appear slightly larger than its normal size. This phenomenon in the language of astronomy is called 'Supermoon'. If the sky is clear in your city, then you can enjoy this beautiful view, which will not require any special equipment.

What is supermoon?

'Supermoon' is an astronomical event that occurs when the full moon moon is closest to the Earth during the Earth's circumambulation. The Moon rotates not in a full circle around the earth, but in an oval orbit. When the close point of the full moon and the Earth (also called Periji) comes together, we see 'Supermoon'.

According to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), due to this proximity, the Moon looks up to 14 percent larger and up to 30 percent more shiny than the most distant moon of the year. However, this difference is so subtle that it can be a little difficult to identify it without seeing the moon of the previous nights.

This year's first supermoon

This supermoon of October is the first of the total three supermoon of this year. According to astronomers, this is the latest phenomenon, when the moon will fall very short of about 2,24,600 miles (3,61,459 km) of the Earth. The nearest 'Supermoon' of this year will appear in the month of November.

After this, another 'Supermoon' will also appear in December.

The chief astronomer of the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia, Deric Pitts described the phenomenon as "not really very unusual", which means that these astronomical events take place from time to time. Sometimes it is also accompanied by other astronomical events like lunar eclipse.

How to see Supermoon?

If the sky of your city is clear, then you can see this 'supermoon' anywhere in the world with your naked eyes without any binoculars or special equipment. However, the pits have also advised that when the moon is very high in the sky, it can be difficult to recognize its size. Therefore, to enjoy this magnificent view, when the moon is close to the horizon, then try to see it. Objects close to the horizon, such as trees or buildings, help to compare the size of the moon, which makes it really even bigger.

Future astronomical views

This astronomical series will also continue in 2026, when there will be two important lunar eclipses. In March 2026, a full lunar eclipse will appear in most parts of North America, Asia and Australia. In 2026, partial lunar eclipse will appear in the US, Africa and Europe.
