Tata Sons Meeting: The dispute within Tata Sons the country’s largest business conglomerate has now come to the surface with growing opposition to Noel Tata’s decisions. To resolve the matter a meeting between central government ministers and Tata Sons officials is scheduled to take place today. Tata Group businesses span from salt to technology and it is still India’s most valuable corporate house. After the passing of veteran industrialist Ratan Tata in October last year all has not been well within the group. Although Noel Tata eventually took charge after much debate dissent and internal power struggles are still continuing  in the group.  Now the tensions are spilling out openly and the government has been forced to intervene. On Monday two Union cabinet ministers will meet four senior Tata officials to discuss the crisis according to a report by Navbharat Times. Monday’s meeting will bring together two cabinet ministers and four key Tata officials including Tata Trusts Chairman Noel Tata Vice Chairman Venu Srinivasan Tata Sons Chairman N. Chandrasekaran and Tata Trusts trustee Darius Khambata. What Are Clashes Over Appointments In Tata Group? The dispute is over the removal of former Defence Secretary Vijay Singh a nominated director of Tata Sons and also over the appointment of trustee Mehli Mistry in his place. This move was opposed by Venu Srinivasan and Noel Tata but supported by trustees Pramit Jhaveri Darius Khambata and Jehangir triggering a rift within the board. Tensions escalated further when one trustee sent an email to others threatening to oust Venu Srinivasan in the upcoming October 10 meeting similar to Vijay Singh’s removal. This has deepened hostility within the Trust.  According to a Navbharat Times report citing sources such actions are being viewed as attempts to “hijack” Tata Sons and wrest control of the group. The turmoil can disrupt the company’s governance with several board positions lying vacant due to disagreements over new appointments. How Will Govt Resolve These Issues? According to media reports discussions will focus on the division of powers between Tata Trusts and its trustees to ensure that the functioning of Tata Sons and its companies remains unaffected.  With the next Tata Trusts meeting scheduled for October 10 the government will try to facilitate a resolution beforehand. The biggest point of contention is the appointment of nominated directors to the Tata Sons board and whether board discussions should be shared with other trustees.
