A Coronation Street star has opened up on a terrifying health incident which left her with loss of sight. Lisa George, who played Beth Sutherland on the cobbles, has been diagnosed with a condition that has left her partially blind in one eye and without peripheral vision in the other.

The soap star, who also appeared on Dancing On Ice in 2020, has been managing a medical condition that has left her partially sightless. After years of seeking answers following initial sight loss in 2016, with a recurrence in 2022, she was diagnosed with NAION (non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy). Sharing an update in a recent interview with the Mirror, Lisa said: "At present, my eyes seem to have stabilised. I can see distances perfectly fine, but written text is a challenge. All writing and numbers appear blurry, so I need glasses for reading, and for driving I use varifocals, which help me see the SatNav.

"I avoid driving at night because I have blind spots, but I reckon that's also due to ageing!"

She also shared that her health problems impacted her work on the ITV soap as she explained: "If we were shooting Corrie scenes on the pavement in the dark, I'd request to be positioned on the inside of the pavement as I couldn't make out the edge of the kerb."

Lisa added: "In 2022, I was dining out for [former Corrie co-star] Katie McGlynn's birthday and the restaurant was dimly lit. When I looked at the menu, everything was blurry... I remember thinking, 'Something is seriously wrong.'

"I rang the ophthalmologist the following day and was directed to A&E, where I ended up staying in hospital for a week. They informed me that it was likely due to my diabetes; I hadn't been fully diagnosed with it at that point.

"My Spotlight CV now lists me as "visually impaired", which did make me question if it might deter people from casting me. However, there is improved accessibility now for individuals with all sorts of disabilities, so I don't let it concern me.

"I don't bring it up very often. When I was on Coronation Street, the only reason many people were aware was because my script was printed in size 16 font, so they could probably see it from the other side of the set!"
