Parenting Tips: Let us know from the experts what can be done to cure a child's cough quickly and what mistakes should be avoided during this time.

Parenting Tips: It's very common for children to catch colds and coughs, especially with changing weather. As the feeling of mild colds gradually increases so does parental anxiety. If you have a young child at home, this article may be helpful. Let's learn from experts what can be done to quickly cure a child's cough and what mistakes should be avoided during this time.

What do experts say?

Pediatrician Puneet Anand shared a video on his Instagram account regarding this. In the video, the pediatrician explains that when a child has a mild cough, parents often start giving them cough syrup, but this is unsafe. In some cases, cough syrups can even harm children. In such cases, you can try some other simple and safe methods to treat a cough, such as:

Keep the child hydrated

Pediatricians advise, first of all, to keep your child hydrated. Avoid dehydration during a cough or cold. Breast milk, lukewarm water, soup, or lentil water are very beneficial for this.

Give light and warm food

Cold or fried foods can worsen a cough. Therefore, give your child warm soups, lentil water, or porridge. These are easy to digest and soothe the throat.

Saline nasal drops

If your child has a blocked nose, use saline nasal drops. This is the safest way to clear the nose, especially for young children.

Try steam inhalation (with caution)

Inhaling mild steam can help relieve your child's congestion. However, be sure to apply the steam from a distance to avoid the risk of burns.

Get enough rest

Rest and sleep are essential for the body to recover from coughs and colds. Give your child some rest.

If there is fever, give paracetamol (as per doctor's advice)

If the child has fever or pain, paracetamol can be given in the dose prescribed by the doctor.

Keep away from dust and smoke

Keep your child's room clean, dust-free, and smoke-free. Things like smoke or perfume can aggravate a cough.

Wear loose, comfortable clothing

Avoid dressing your baby in overly warm or heavy clothing. Comfortable clothing helps maintain a balanced body temperature.

Please consult a doctor

Beyond this, pediatricians advise against self-administering cough syrup or antibiotics to your child under any circumstances. Also, avoid trying any home remedies. If your child has a high fever, difficulty breathing, wheezing, or difficulty swallowing milk or food, consult a doctor immediately.
