Xbox Game Pass may be a cracking deal if you're making the most of its offerings, but if you're itching to explore new horizons, it's thankfully a doddle to do so.

Xbox Game Pass has always been chock-a-block with options for subscribers, but as it strives to offer even more, it's bumping into a price issue. And that's likely what's brought you here.

Let's not beat around the bush – Xbox Game Pass has become rather pricey, and despite its plethora of games, that doesn't instantly make it a sound investment, particularly if players aren't fussed about claiming the included Fortnite Crew subscription rewards unveiled alongside the October Xbox Game Pass price hike.

It's understandable if you're eager to banish your subscription to the shadow realm as it undergoes significant changes, but you need to actually know how to do it first – so how exactly do you throw in the towel?

Here's the lowdown on how to cancel Xbox Game Pass.

How to cancel Xbox Game Pass

There are several ways to cancel Xbox Game Pass. Here's how you can do it on desktop or mobile:

  • Go to the Microsoft website's Services page
  • Sign in with your Microsoft account
  • Find the Xbox Game Pass subscription and select Manage
  • Click on Cancel Subscription, and follow the instructions

This website is the top spot to get the cancellation sorted, and it's where the My Xbox App will redirect you too, so feel free to dive in using the app, but it might be quicker to just pop in via your browser.

Likewise, you can cancel Xbox Game Pass on your console by doing the following:

  • Navigate to the Settings page in the Xbox menu of your console
  • From Settings, go to Account, then Subscriptions, then click Cancel

All these options allow you to downgrade your subscription. However, if you've already cancelled, simply re-subscribe to the Xbox Game Pass edition that suits your needs, especially if you wish to maintain online play or a game library.

You can also halt your recurring billing with your payment provider and continue using the service until its end date. Bear in mind, a complete cancellation of the service will remove your ability to play non-free-to-play games online.

If you want to keep this feature, follow these steps to downgrade to an Xbox Game Pass Essential subscription. Alternatively, switch to the Xbox Game Pass Premium tier to access a vast library of games.

The cost of the service is a constant talking point, so find the service that fits your needs (or doesn't, and cancel completely) and your gaming style. You might not have the latest games at your fingertips, but you'll have more cash in your pocket to buy the games you really want – it's a bit of give and take.
