Fans are mourning beloved rocker Steve Whalley after the former Slade guitarist and Sad Café frontman died following a heart attack, according to online reports - just weeks after performing at Glastonbury. Tributes have poured in for the British rocker, who was best known for his powerful vocals, guitar talent and larger-than-life presence on stage. A statement posted online (Septembe 28) confirmed his death and paid tribute to the musician's long career: "This week we sadly lost another of the greats, Steve Whalley, who was involved in many music projects and bands over the years including Sad Café, Slade II and The Steve Whalley Band.

"Steve played on the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury four times, he was with us here on The Pilton Stage only last year and performed just a few weeks ago at the Glastonbury Extravaganza. He will be hugely missed." Fans and fellow musicians have flooded social media with messages of grief and admiration for the much-loved performer.

A heartfelt post shared on Facebook read: "R.I.P Steve Whalley. Former Slade and Sad Café frontman, recent Don Powell Band frontman. All round great singer, songwriter and guitarist.

"A great loss, we have happy memories of many European festivals & nights out with Steve with The Original Jukebox Heroes."

Steve took over as frontman for Slade in 1992, stepping into the shoes of legendary lead singer Noddy Holder and leading the band for more than 15 years.

During his tenure, he toured across the UK and Europe, keeping the iconic glam rock sound alive for a new generation of fans.

One tribute read: "Very sad, after more than 20 years I finally managed to get Steve, Tat, Richard, and Major, The Steve Whalley Band at THE CLUB last year for Michael's birthday.

"Michael was so impressed he booked him for the extravaganza. RIP Steve, a member of The Slade Family, loved and respected by all Slade Fans and music fans in general. Thoughts with April, Tat, friends and family."

Another added: "Very sad news, remember him at the gig Andy put on for Michael's birthday, what a great night."

Steve also fronted The Steve Whalley Band and toured extensively with The Original Jukebox Heroes, continuing to perform at festivals well into his later years.

His last public appearance was just weeks before his death at the Glastonbury Extravaganza. Fans have hailed him as "a true gentleman of rock" whose music "brought joy to everyone who heard him".
