Tent-based homestay inaugurated by Indian Army to promote tourism in Uttarakhand's Kumaon Sector
In a bid to promote sustainable tourism and strengthen livelihood opportunities in India’s frontier regions, the Indian Army has inaugurated a tent-based homestay facility in Garbyang village, located in the Kumaon sector of Uttarakhand. The initiative, launched under Operation Sadbhavna, was inaugurated by Lieutenant General D.G. Misra, General Officer Commanding, Uttar Bharat Area.

The homestay, developed as part of the Government of India’s Vibrant Villages Programme, aims to foster economic self-reliance among border communities through responsible tourism and local entrepreneurship. The project will soon be handed over to villagers for independent management, ensuring community ownership and long-term sustainability.

The initiative is one among several development projects undertaken by the Indian Army in the Kumaon sector under Operation Sadbhavna. Other efforts include the installation of hybrid solar plants, village electrification drives, healthcare camps, and infrastructure improvements such as roads and water management systems. Together, these measures aim to improve living conditions and connect remote border villages with India’s broader developmental framework.

Army Homestay: All about Garbyang

Nestled amid the snow-capped peaks of the Himalayas, Garbyang is often referred to as the “Gateway to Shivnagri Gunji” — a scenic stopover for devotees travelling to Adi Kailash and Om Parvat. The region’s serene landscape, cultural heritage, and spiritual significance make it an emerging destination for religious and nature-based tourism.

With its breathtaking views, spiritual landmarks like Kalimata Mandir, and proximity to pilgrimage routes, Garbyang is now positioned as a model for sustainable tourism in India’s border regions — blending national security efforts with inclusive development.

Local residents have welcomed the project, calling it a “transformative step” toward sustainable growth and employment generation. The Army emphasized that the Garbyang homestay will remain community-run, ensuring that tourism revenues directly benefit villagers.
