Zoho Corporation's instant messaging app, Arattai, is in the news these days. The Indian government has been encouraging Made-in-India apps, leading to curiosity about Arattai online. In recent days, millions of Indian users have downloaded the app. In fact, the indigenous app, Arattai, is being considered an alternative to WhatsApp. While it offers all the same services as WhatsApp, it's still lacking in some areas, which we'll explain today.
Arattai Misses This Important Feature
Zoho is promoting its instant messaging app, Arattai, as a privacy-first service, storing all user data in India. Voice and video calls are end-to-end encrypted, but this security feature is currently unavailable for text chats. However, it does offer a "Secret Chat" option, allowing users to securely message. The company says that end-to-end encryption will soon be implemented in all chats.
What is end-to-end encryption?
End-to-end encryption is a safety feature that ensures chats between two users are secure from one device to another. This means that no one can intercept what the app users are talking about. Encrypted messages are also protected from hacking on the company's servers and can only be decrypted for security reasons. If the messages are not encrypted, they are decrypted during indexing on the server. Simply put, the messages are exposed on the server. In such a situation, unencrypted messages are at risk of being leaked or misused. Due to the lack of end-to-end encryption in Arattai's text messages, the messages are decrypted for processing, then stored on the server with encryption again.
Many users on social media reported that Arattai supports E2EE (End-to-End Encryption) for calls and videos, but switching to Secret Chats for secure messaging is a bit inconvenient. This means that regular personal and group chats are currently not fully protected.
Encryption is available by default in WhatsApp.
It's worth noting that other popular messaging apps, such as WhatsApp, Telegram, and Signal, offer end-to-end encryption by default for calls, chats, and videos. However, Arattai lags in this regard.
The company has issued a statement.
In response to criticism on social media regarding this issue, Arattai stated its official Twitter account. It stated that privacy is of utmost importance to the company. End-to-end encryption for chats is a priority, and its team is actively working on it.
