Social media platform Instagram has launched a feature that allows users to share their live locations with friends. Called the "Map feature," it's very similar to Snapchat's location-sharing feature. Interestingly, Instagram has incorporated several Snapchat features into its app recently.

What is the new Map feature?

Instagram's new Map feature gives you control over who you want to share your location with. This means you can share your location with just your close friends, a specific group, or everyone. This feature isn't a navigation tool, but rather a social map, where users can see their friends' activities, information about nearby parties, and public events.

Not just a map, but an event guide too

Instagram's new Map also allows you to explore Reels, posts, and Stories with location tags. Here, you'll find trending cafes, city spots, and friends' travel updates. Users will now be able to find out where parties are taking place, what events are happening, or what's trending nearby. This means that Instagram has now become a social networking platform as well as an event discovery platform.

What are the privacy measures?

Instagram has acknowledged that the location-sharing feature can raise privacy concerns. Therefore, the company has added several security options. Location sharing is off by default, and users will have to manually enable it. A location indicator is provided at the top of the map, which will show whether your location is being shared or not. Location can be disabled at any time.

What could be the problem?

However, once you turn on location, it won't automatically turn off. This means you'll have to manually disable it yourself. Many users may forget to enable it, leaving their location constantly visible to others.

If you've turned it on for "Friends" or "Public," many of your Instagram connections can track your movements. This is why privacy experts are advising users to exercise caution.

Special Privacy Update in India
This feature was already live in some countries, but it's been launched in India with additional privacy features. The company says it's continuously improving this feature, prioritizing user safety.
