Tea and coffee stains will disappear from carpets if you pour a different drink on them

Many people know all too well that carpets can be ruined in seconds. All it takes is one spill of tea, coffee or juice, and the stain can feel impossible to remove. Many people reach straight for chemical cleaners, but those can sometimes do more harm than good, especially on rugs with delicate fibres or faded colours.

That's why experts say it's better to try simple, non-toxic methods first. And while most people are aware of the usual white vinegar, baking soda or soapy water tricks, there's one surprising solution that not many know about. In fact, some experts now recommend pouring a completely different drink onto the stain, and it's something you're more likely to find in the fridge than the cleaning cupboard.

Experts at Rugs Direct say it's important not to panic when a spill happens.

Instead of reaching for harsh chemicals, try using ingredients that are already in your home, especially if the rug is valuable or made from a natural material.

They explained: "Here at Rugs Direct, we understand better than most just how damaging a stain or spill on a rug can be.

"It's easy to see why many people would jump straight for the chemical cleaners to fix the problem, but that may do more harm than good."

One of their most unusual tips is using beer to lift old tea and coffee stains from a carpet.

The experts said: "If you have ever spilled coffee or tea on your rug, like most, you may have thought it was near impossible to remove. Not true, here is the life hack for you: beer.

"Yes, really, you can literally lift the stain out if you pour a small amount of beer on top and rub it lightly.

"The stain should then disappear. As with all these methods, you may need to repeat this process to make sure all traces of the stain have gone."

Other expert-approved methods include mixing white vinegar with warm water for stubborn food stains, or using baking soda to soak up spills before they turn into permanent marks.

Shaving cream also works well on juice or grease, while salt can help tackle red wine, ketchup, or even oily food stains if used quickly and correctly.

To use shaving foam, blot the stained area first, then apply a small amount of shaving cream and gently rub it in with a damp sponge.

For salt, sprinkle it over the fresh stain, leave it for a few minutes to absorb the liquid, then vacuum it up and wipe the area with cold water.

However, the experts warn that for delicate rugs, especially those made from silk, wool, or other natural fibres, it's best to check with a professional before applying anything.

"Any stain should be seen by a professional so they can assess both the stain and the rug," they added.
