Made-in-India apps are being discussed extensively on the internet these days. The government is also fully supporting these apps. Recently, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav shared a video using Map My India's indigenous navigation app, Mappls, which has sparked a buzz among people. Mappls is being touted as a rival to Google Maps. Therefore, we used Mappls to see how it differs from Google Maps. Let's explore the differences between the two apps in detail, and which app we found easier to use from a user perspective.

UI and UX: Which is better?
Whenever a user opens an app, the first thing they notice is its smoothness. Google Maps is quite smooth, and there are no issues with scrolling. The animations in Google Maps are also quite good. However, Mappls' UI isn't as smooth as Google Maps. There are frame drops when searching for locations on the map and scrolling up and down or back and forth. In terms of user experience, we found Google Maps to be much better than Mappls.

Mapls Shows 3D Junction Views.
Google Maps doesn't display a clear road view at multiple intersections, lanes, and flyovers, which confuses many drivers. However, Mappls has solved this problem. It shows a 3D view even before a flyover or highway intersection, giving you a clear view of the correct route and reducing the chance of error when changing lanes.

Live Traffic and Hazard Updates
Google Maps often displays alerts for accidents, traffic jams, and waterlogging. However, Mappls surpasses Mappls in terms of alerts. Users can also see alerts for potholes, waterlogging, speed breakers, traffic lights, and accidents. Mappls also offers overspeed alerts. Furthermore, Mappls also shows you accident-prone areas (black spots) on the roads.

Indoor Navigation
Google Maps only offers navigation for limited locations and some global venues. However, Mappls also offers navigation maps for major malls, convention centers, and airports.

Intelligent Routing for Electric Vehicles
Both Mappls and Google Maps provide information about e-vehicle charging stations and petrol pumps. However, Mappls also provides information about how far an electric vehicle can travel on its remaining battery. However, Google has not yet introduced this feature for Indian users.

Can Mappls be a better alternative to Google Maps?
Overall, Mappls offers several commendable features, such as 3D junction views, black spot alerts, and EV intelligent routing. These features have been specifically designed for Indian roads and driving conditions, making it a local-friendly app.

However, Google Maps still excels in terms of user interface (UI) and user experience (UX). Its smooth scrolling, fast response, and animation quality make it more professional and intuitive. On the other hand, Mappls still experiences minor scrolling and rendering issues, which can sometimes be distracting while driving.

However, some of Mappls' innovative features, such as useful local information about potholes, speed breakers, and overspeed alerts, ensure a safe journey for users. We hope that if Mappls improves its shortcomings, it can become a rival to Google Maps in India.
