As the winter season approaches, the need for hot water increases in most homes. While there is the option of geyser or solar heater, many people still use electric rods. It is a low-cost and quick-working device, but a little carelessness with it can prove fatal.

Rod- accidents have increased in recent years, especially in rural areas and small towns, where safety standards are often ignored. In such a situation, it is important that the user follows some necessary precautions while using the rod.

1. Always use ISI marked rod

There are many types of local rods available in the market which are cheap, but they do not meet the safety standards. Always buy ISI certified rods only, so that the chances of overheating or wiring failure are reduced.

2. Do not plug in before putting the rod in the water

Many people turn on the electric plug in a hurry before putting the rod in the water. Doing so can be extremely dangerous. First insert the rod safely into the bucket and ensure that the wire and plug are dry, only then switch on the power.

3. Avoid bare wires or loose plugs

If the rod coil is old, bare wires are visible on it or the plug has become loose, get it replaced immediately. This combination can cause a fatal electric shock in a humid bathroom.

4. Use plastic bucket

Do not use steel or metal bucket for hot water. If current is leaking from somewhere while the rod is moving, the metal bucket can increase the electric current. A plastic bucket is the safest option.

5. Keep children and elderly away

Do not leave small children or the elderly alone in the bathroom while using the rod. Advise them to maintain distance from the rod. After filling with hot water, immediately take out the rod and keep it in a dry place.

Accidents can become fatal

Just a few months ago, incidents of electrocution from rods were reported in different parts of the country. In Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, children and women lost their lives when the rod was left running in water. To avoid such accidents, both public awareness and caution are necessary.

Government and experts advice

According to electricity department officials and safety experts, the rod is a “dangerous but useful tool”. If it is used properly, it does not cause harm. But if ignored, it can actually make the bathroom a ‘stage of current’.
