Kathi Roll was first introduced by the famous Nizam restaurant in Kolkata in the 1930s. The then owner, Raza Hasan Sahab, created it as an ‘on-the-go’ food for British officers and busy customers so that people could enjoy kebabs on the go. According to popular belief, British officers at that time did not like to eat kebabs with hands, so the cooks adopted the method of serving kebabs by wrapping them in paratha so that it could be eaten easily. Earlier kebabs were cooked on iron skewers, but later, in 1964, these were replaced with bamboo skewers. With this change, this dish got the name Kathi Roll, in which ‘Kathi’ means ‘wooden skewer’ in Bengali language.
Topping this year’s global list is Greece’s famous wrap, Gyros, which is prepared with meat, bread, sauce and vegetables like tomatoes, onions, lettuce and cucumbers. This traditional Greek dish is known throughout the world for its unique taste and refreshing flavor. Sangchu Ssam of South Korea has secured second place. It consists of rice, thin slices of meat and condiments such as gochujang paste, samjang dip or pickled vegetables wrapped in lettuce leaves. Türkiye’s Tantuni Wrap has come at the third place and Mexico’s Enchiladas Suizas has come at the fourth place. At the fifth place was America’s Carne Asada Burrito.
A wrap is typically a flatbread filled with meat, vegetables, or other ingredients and accompanied by a delicious sauce or dressing. The specialty of Kathi Roll lies in its simplicity and variety.
