New Delhi: Rain spoiled the fun of the 15th match of the ICC Womens World Cup 2025 played at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Tuesday. The match between Sri Lanka and New Zealand was declared a no-result with both teams settling for one point each. This is the second match of the tournament to be abandoned due to rain both of which took place in Colombo. Sri Lankas excellent batting rain robbed them of a chance to win Sri Lankan captain Chamari Athapaththu won the toss and decided to bat first which proved to be a good decision. The team posted a strong total of 258 for 6 in their allotted 50 overs. Chamari Athapaththu played a captain’s innings of 53 runs from 72 balls while Nilakshi de Silva made an unbeaten 55 to anchor the innings. Vishmi Gunaratne (28 runs) and Hasini Perera (46 runs) also made important contributions. Sophie Devine and Bree Illing took wickets New Zealand captain Sophie Devine and Bree Illing bowled brilliantly. Devine tried to contain the Sri Lankan batters by taking 3 wickets in 9 overs while Bree Illing also took 2 wickets. However Sri Lanka’s innings was balanced and strong giving them complete control of the match. Ground staff’s efforts failed continuous rain spoiled everything Heavy rain that began in the afternoon interrupted the match twice. The ground staff tried their best to restart play but the rain refused to stop. Ultimately the umpires declared the match a no-result. With this result Sri Lanka now has a total of 2 points while New Zealand has 3 points. The two captains concluded the match by shaking hands.
