India needed exactly an hour on the final day to apply the finishing touches to the second Test, surging to a seven-wicket victory at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.
The result was never in any doubt going into Tuesday's last day of the two-match series against West Indies. Needing just 58 more runs after having lopped 63 off the target of 121 on the fourth evening for the loss of Yashasvi Jaiswal, India had to play extraordinarily poorly not to register their fourth victory of the new World Test Championship cycle. That wasn't going to happen, not with KL Rahul cutting out all risks for the first half hour in the company of the slightly more enterprising Sai Sudharsan. Roston Chase stuck with spin, expectedly; to their credit, the three spinners on view, including the captain, didn't offer easy runs up top but  were in no hurry, aware that it was only a matter of time before the tape was breasted. Improved show by WI Despite surrendering the series 0-2 to slump to their fifth straight defeat, the Caribbeans ended the tour on a positive note with two superb catches on the fifth morning. Shai Hope, fresh off his first Test ton in more than eight years, latched onto a screamer to his right at slip to send Sudharsan back to the hut after a second-wicket stand of 79. Then, it was the turn of Justin Greaves to leave one final imprint on a series where he has caught the eye with the bat against spin. Shubman Gill, who replaced Sudharsan in the middle, appeared determined to hasten the end, producing a towering six and a scorching four when he mistimed a big drive against Chase. Greaves whirled around from mid-wicket to run 20 yards, looking at the ball over his shoulder and pouching it superbly. These were minor crumbs from a series that began extremely poorly for the visitors, but they will take heart from an improved display in the Indian capital, undoubtedly helped by a dead-as-a-dodo track that needed India's bowlers to be at their very best to pick up the 20 wickets required to force victory. KL warmed up for Aus ODIs Rahul, who was becalmed and stroke-less for long spells at the start of Tuesday's action, sprang to life with some delightful strokes that stemmed from grand use of the feet, including a wristy whip over mid-wicket against the turn off left-arm spinner Khary Pierre. After keeping his tryst with a half-century, he warmed up for the with a reverse-swept four and sealed the deal by punching Jomel Warrican, the West Indian vice-captain, wide of mid-on for the last of his six fours. Having topped 500 runs for the first time in his Test career in England in the summer, Rahul extended his consistent run with efforts of 100, 38 and 58 not out, setting himself up nicely for more challenging battles against WTC titlists South Africa in Kolkata and Guwahati next month. Brief scores India 518-5d & 124-3 (KL Rahul 58*, S Sudharsan 39; R Chase 2-36) beat WI 248 & 390 by seven wickets
