Impact of heavy rain in Chennai

Chennai: It rained continuously in various areas of Tamil Nadu, especially Chennai, on Wednesday. This rain has affected life, due to which the Meteorological Department has issued a warning in 12 districts of the state.

The Regional Meteorological Center (RMC) of Chennai said that there is a possibility of heavy to very heavy rain in the hilly and coastal areas of the state. There has been a warning of rain with thunderstorms and strong winds in many districts of the south and west.

According to the latest forecast, districts like Coimbatore, Nilgiris, Dindigul, Theni, Virudhunagar, Madurai, Sivagangai, Ramanathapuram, Thoothukudi, Tenkasi, Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari are likely to receive heavy to very heavy rain during the day.

Meteorologists said that the moisture-laden eastern winds coming from the Bay of Bengal are colliding with the atmospheric pressure system formed in South India, due to which the rain activities are increasing.

The rain that started in the morning in Chennai continued intermittently throughout the day, causing waterlogging at many places. The sky will be partly covered with clouds and there is a possibility of moderate to heavy rainfall with thunder in the evening.

The maximum temperature in the city is expected to be around 32 degrees Celsius and the minimum temperature is expected to be between 26 to 27 degrees Celsius.

In view of the intensity of rain in the southern and western districts, the district administration has asked to take the decision of closing schools and colleges based on the local weather conditions. However, despite incessant rain in Chennai and Chengalpattu, no official announcement of school closure was made till the evening.

The Meteorological Department has warned fishermen not to go into the sea. Squally winds reaching 35 to 45 kmph gusting to 55 kmph at times are likely over Gulf of Mannar, Kumari Sagar, Kerala coast, south-east Arabian Sea and Lakshadweep-Maldives area.

There may be high waves in the sea in these areas, so fishermen have been advised to stay on the coast.

The administration has appealed to the people to remain alert, stay away from water-logged areas and follow the advice of the local administration and disaster management teams.
