Digital threats have come to light in the alleged gang rape of an 18-year-old B.Tech first year student at South Asian University (SAU) in South Delhi. The victim told in the FIR that before the incident, the accused gave threats through WhatsApp and e-mail. On the first day, the accused asked her to come near the guest house, which the student ignored. The next day, a threatening e-mail came in which the accused sent vulgar emojis and asked her to come out of the hostel. The victim immediately showed this message to colleagues, who checked the premises at 11:27 pm, but did not find any suspect. On the day of the incident, the accused threatened on WhatsApp and Telegram that if she was not found at gate number three, her photo would be e-mailed to all the students. Thereafter, the student went alone towards gate number three, where she was allegedly sexually assaulted by four unidentified men.
Delhi Police said a case of gang rape has been registered and teams have been formed to identify the suspects. However, the alleged apathy and obstructive attitude of the university administration has further increased the resentment among students and the general public.
The victim said that when she contacted the hostel in-charge after the incident, the doctor present there stressed the seriousness of the situation. However, the officer allegedly did not take her statement seriously and instead started making irrelevant allegations against the student.
The victim alleged in the FIR that the hostel authorities advised her to take a bath and change her clothes instead of calling the police or seeking immediate medical help. She further said that the authorities also prevented her from showing her injuries by making video calls to her mother, which left her under physical and mental stress. In the FIR, the student said: “I wanted to make a video call to my mother and show her the injury marks, but the hostel in-charge and a guard surrounded me.” Further, the student alleged that she was forced to leave the hostel by sending threatening emails and obscene messages.
The victim’s friends tried to bring the matter to the notice of police and medical authorities. Finally on Monday afternoon one of her friends made a PCR call. The police team immediately reached the campus and found the victim in a distressed condition. After that, counseling was done and he was medically examined at Madan Mohan Malviya Hospital. During this time his statement was recorded.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Ankit Chauhan confirmed that a case has been registered under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code, including gang rape, kidnapping, wrongful restraint, and administering poison. “Investigation is underway and teams are working to identify the suspects. The woman’s statement was recorded before a magistrate on Tuesday,” he said.
